...told me of a 'rod knock'. He said that this is basically the end of the engine in the car. How long will the rod take to seize the engine? If I were to drive the car around, how much longer would I expect it to run?

a rod knock is when the bearing is about to go. if the rod comes loose or breaks, it wont be long until it puts a hole in the block.
